As I said yesterday, we stayed at this just remarkable guesthouse, called Sukhothai Guest House in New Sukhothai. We loved it there. Great bunglaow, with AC, and hot water all in a small garden setting for only 600 baht a nite (about $20). Great food cooked right in the lobby. Highly recommend this Guest House.
We got up early on Thursday as we had planned to ride to Old Sukhothai which is an ancient capital of Thailand dating back to the 12th century and there is a National Park there with the ruins of Wats and old temples. It was only about a 15K ride there, so we got there about 8:30 in the morning, paid 40 baht to get in (about $1) then you can ride your bike through the area. They also rent bikes at the ticket area. Great place to ride and you can get off the bike and walk among the ruins.
We left Old Sukhothai around 10:00 a.m. then caught a secondary road (hiway 101) north to Si Satchanala where planned to try and find a hotel to spend the night. The road was great for riding, very little traffic but somewhat boring as there was little to really see or very few villages. We did find a little side restaurant, very small, but the owner was really nice and had 3 little kids, so I doled out more t'shirts to the kids.
We finally rolled into Si Satchanala around 3 pm and tried finding a place to stay...what a disaster. Nothing in English and we had difficult time. Finally found a place that was kind of like old motel. No cold water, no ac...but overhead fan and live Gecko's in my room on the ceiling (it's supposed to be good luck), so what more can I ask for...cold shower after a long hot ride..
